Chillingham Castle is a magnificent 12th Century stronghold. Throughout the centuries the castle’s architectural detail and massive walls have remained unchanged. The medieval strength and character remains. The Castle is 13 miles north of Alnwick, 13 miles west of the spectacular Northumberland coast and 7 miles from the market town of Wooler making it an ideal base for exploring Northumberland. We have a selection of comfortable self-catering apartments available to rent all year round. The Castle itself is open to day visitors every afternoon from Easter until the end of October.

Sleeps 4 in a twin room and double 4 poster bedroom. There is a large bathroom for all to share. Located in the heart of the ancient castle access is up two flights of a stone spiral staircase (35 steps). The fine Elizabethan Long Gallery with its timbered ceiling has a magnificent early carved chimney piece over a wood burning stove. Some rooms overlook the great medieaval courtyard. Sleeps up to 5 in a twin bedroom, double bedroom and small single room. There is one bathroom for all to share. From this high up apartment in the ancient castle, you can enjoy fine views of the gardens and surrounding mountains. Its location in the castle means it is not suitable for those less mobile. You will need to climb up a narrow stone spiral staircase with 55 stairs to reach this apartment, but the views are worth it. From this room the castle sentries of old looked out to assure peaceful action in the surrounding area.Landseer
Sleeps up to 6 in a double and twin room. For additional guests there is a double sofa bed in the living room. There is a detached kitchen/dining room with a large, handsome living room on the first floor which is furnished with engravings by Sir Edwin Landseer. He was a great artist who became a close friend to the castle and a frequent visitor.Dairy
Sleeps up to 6 in a double and twin bedroom. The bedrooms and one bathroom can be found on the ground floor. Upstairs is a large living room with a double sofa bed and a kitchen/dining area. This apartment was converted from the old castle dairy and the bedrooms of the dairy maids. There are views over trees of the valley and also the burn which runs down from the lake.Tower
Sleeps up to 4. The apartment has a twin bedded room with mattresses that can be zipped together for a king size (please specify at time of booking which you require). Two further guests can sleep on the double sofa bed in the living room. This apartment is ideal for a couple or a family. There is one bath room and the kitchen is immediately off the living room. The apartment overlooks the courtyard and you can clearly see it is built right up against the ancient stones of the outside wall of the castle fortifications.Courtyard
Sleeps up to 4 in a double and twin room. On the first floor is a fine high-timbered open plan room with sitting, kitchen and dining areas. The ground floor bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Chillingham Castle is open to the public (from Easter until the end of October). Onsite residents and non residents can enjoy an afternoon spent exploring the grounds and visiting the tearoom. Our tearoom is a delightful experience serving soups, sandwiches, cakes, teas and coffees in ancient surroundings with the added bonus of a blazing open fire.Those who are interested in the supernatural will love our ghost tours. The castle has some of the highest levels of paranormal activity in the country. Visitors have seen a large collection of apparitions over the years.
Our Medieval castle is in the village of Chillingham. The market town of Wooler is close by and has places to eat, drink and shop for essentials. Wooler is a popular base for walkers and is often referred to as the gateway to The Cheviots. For those who want to visit the coast, it can be reached in less than an hour’s drive. The Northumberland Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With 30 miles of beaches to explore, you will never be short of coastal views to enjoy.
