Visiting Belford & Exploring Northumberland
Outchester and Ross Farm Cottages have quite possibly the best location for holiday cottages on the Northumberland coast. Halfway between Berwick and Alnwick, two miles east of the A1, our holiday cottages are set in area of open farmland with peace and tranquillity on our doorstep. The cottages at Ross are walking distance from the beautiful Ross Beach – a three mile stretch of sand with views of Holy Island to the left and Bamburgh Castle to the right. The whole coastline adjoining Outchester and Ross is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a National Nature Reserve in recognition of the coastal birdlife.
Northumberland has masses to offer the holidaymaker. There are more castles and fortified houses here than in any other county in Britain, a result of centuries of border warfare with the Scots. These include Alnwick, Bamburgh, Chillingham, Dunstanburgh, Lindisfarne, Norham and Warkworth.
The National Trust own three major properties in the area: Cragside, Lindisfarne Castle, Wallington Hall and, a recent acquisition, Seaton Delaval Hall, possibly Vanburgh's greatest creation. English Heritage run a large number of diverse properties, including Berwick Castle and Ramparts, Brinkburn Priory and Warkworth Castle. We are very close to the Scottish border, where there are a host of magnificent properties to visit, among them Floors Castle, Manderstoun House and Mellerstain. For those interested in gardens, we have the world famous Alnwick Garden on our doorstep.
Hadrian's Wall, built by Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD, runs across England and there are many Roman forts open to the public: Vindolanda, Chesters and Housesteads are all worth a visit for those interested in the Roman period.
The Farne Islands can be reached by boat from Seahouses. There one can see one of the largest colonies of grey seals in United Kingdom waters. The puffins are very attractive in their spring plumage and are always a great favourite with children.
You can be assured that, whatever your interests, you will find many things to enjoy in the area during a holiday at Outchester and Ross. Or you can simply relax in the peaceful surroundings of our cottages.
