Nantcol
Llanbedr, Snowdonia, Gwynedd
Summary
Nantcol is a 14th Century Welsh longhouse overlooking the Rhinog Mountains and Drws Ardudwy Pass, at the far end of the savagely beautiful Nantcol valley. It nestles against the mountainside at 1,000 feet with superb views of mountain scenery in a location of private solitude without being isolated. Our self catering home is within the Snowdonia National Park.
Quite breathtaking. This magical place is ‘where the garden reaches to the sky’.
About Nantcol
The house is built of granite stone with massive wood rafters supporting the roof. Nantcol can be dated back to at least 1300 and is a genuine longhouse meaning ‘a single long low oblong building which houses both the family and its cattle’. The cattle would have been housed in the converted spacious farmhouse kitchen and hay kept above in the hayloft bedroom.Nantcol has a very spacious living room downstairs with one open fire and one multi-fuel stove. The large farmhouse kitchen is fully equipped. The massive kitchen table has been in the house for more than two century's (similar examples can be found in some of the farmhouses down the valley). There is an ancient stable door which leads to the outside and the second WC.
Upstairs via a staircase from the drawing room:
1 Large double bedded room.
1 Twin bedded room.
Bathroom and WC.
A large ‘hayloft’ bedroom with 3 single beds and a cot. This room also has its own outside stone staircase to another WC and to the garden.
The whole house is beautifully furnished with many fine and interesting pieces of authentic Welsh furniture including a splendid dresser displaying Welsh china. The old tiled floors are covered with large rugs.
Outside there is a stone terrace, formerly part of the old bakehouse, overlooking a magnificent view of the Rhinog mountains. There is a stone barn and coal shed and children’s playhouse, once the pigsty. There is ample parking and a large grassy play area for children.
