Ballydugan Cottages

Summary

Jim and Jeanie Morrison, well known in the dairy farming fraternity, have restored a row of 18th century traditional, well constructed, Irish cottages, preserving their heritage and providing ideal holiday cottages. Situated in Ballydugan, a few miles from Downpatrick the reputed burial place of St. Patrick and close to the village of Saul, where the patron saint of Ireland first landed.in his coracle in 432 AD.

HUDDLESTON'S COTTAGE (Sleeps 2/4):
Huddleston's Cottage is named after the last family to live there. The two room cottage was refurbished in the early 1900's by the Martin family, The addition of two new rooms made a welcome home for newly wed Mr. & Mrs. Huddleston. Later the Huddleston's opened a post office using a counter just inside the kitchen door for business and situating a gleaming bright red telephone box to the right of the front door in the garden. At this time there were at least four cottages still inhabited and there was always a warm welcome to be found around the Huddleston's hearth.

ORCHARD COTTAGE (Sleeps 4):
Orchard Cottage, dating from c.1700, has character of its own, being built from the local field stone. The Cottage has been lovingly restored after years of use as a farm cart-house. Living room features a slate open fireplace with stone flagged floor.

BUTTERMILK COTTAGE (Sleeps 7):
While Buttermilk is our most spacious cottage, it retains the intimacy of the dwellings from which it originates. The living accommodation of Buttermilk Cottage centres around the old byre which features a large open fireplace of handmade brick, reaching to the original rafters. The accommodation includes a large Living room, Kitchen/dining room, 3 bedrooms (2 ensuite) : Bathroom with cast iron claw foot bath. As with all the cottages the main features of the old cottages have been retained and wedded to the luxurious comforts of to-days living standards as you will see when you look inside.

Despite the foregoing, there is little doubt that the greatest attraction of Newcastle is not the history, nor the various arcades or parks, or even the golf club. Rather, it is the unique natural beauty of the town which makes it stand out as a jewel in the prize winning coast of Down. Various wildlife including the mysterious raven and Peregraine Falcon are found in the nearby slopes and on the slopes themselves many beautiful plants vie for attention with the more rugged heather and bog.

Rates: £270 to £560 per week depending on season. Short breaks available.
