Summary

Craigriach, a tranquil haven in a beautiful location, combines traditional comfort with modern convenience. This family cottage is a pleasure to spend time in but also provides a perfect base from which to explore the area's rugged scenery, rich wildlife, outdoor activities and cultural heritage.

Accommodation

Craigriach is a traditional crofters cottage on a still working croft, although completely enclosed by its own garden fences and walls. It is situated on the historic island of Scalpay ( Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here during his flight from Culloden ) which is connected to Harris by bridge. It has glorious uninterrupted views south over the sea to the Uists and Skye while to the west are the magnificent North Harris mountains. The sea is 50 metres away from your back gate and the sunsets can be breathtaking.

Accommodation centrally heated throughout comprises:

Two double bedrooms upstairs, one with twin beds.
New bathroom with bath and shower.
Two sitting rooms, one with sofa bed, the other with extendable dining table. Both with multi-fuel burners and flat screen TVs.
DVD player, extensive collections of books, DVDs CDs and games.
Music systems in both rooms.
Kitchen seats 3-4 great view at breakfast.
Porch furnished and heated the only place for the outcast smokers!
Garden - seated areas on three sides.
Sheds for cycles etc; contains dryer.
We provide all linen and towels and enough fuel for the burners to get you started (more can be bought locally).

Visiting Isle of Scalpay & Exploring the Western Isles

We are located two miles out from Scalpay village where there is an excellent restaurant with an award winning Chef. On the island there are various craft enterprises including Lorna Wheelers Workshop by the Cartwheel Bothy. We are 8 miles from Tarbert which has 2 hotels, several shops and the ferry terminal.

Attractions:

Fabulous bird life including Golden and Sea Eagles, sea birds in profusion; Redwings, Wheatears, Pipits and so on down to the lowly Wrens which inhabit the drystone walls around the cottage.
Exciting Wildlife - Seals in abundance, Otters and various whales seen offshore.
Wonderful fishing - both sea and game. (Rods in cottage).
Beautiful and interesting walks - The walk to the historically important lighthouse Eilean Glas starts 100 mts. from the house.
The Callanish Stones, St. Clements Church, Ancient Brochs and standing stones all within an easy drive.
A wealth of outdoor pursuits - Windsurfing, seacanoeing, rockclimbing, Golf (clubs in shed) all within easy reach by car.
Long pristine beaches of astounding beauty an easy drive away.

Sleeps: 4 (+2 on sofa-bed).

One well behaved dog welcome but sheep all around garden. Free of charge.

If the Saturday ferries are proving a problem then Friday - Friday , or Sat. - Fri. bookings can be arranged.
