Summary

Grist Mill cottage is a listed historic Georgian watermill of 1726 that has been completely and beautifully restored to provide contemporary comfort whilst still retaining many of its original features. Grist Mill cottage is our largest self catering holiday accommodation here at the tranquil Owlpen Manor Estate in Uley, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire and is ideal for families or groups of friends as the open plan ground floor provides an excellent hub for large gatherings.

About Grist Mill

The ground floor has an entrance hall leading to a large open plan kitchen and living room, with two sofas, armchairs and a snug wood-burning stove in addition to the central heating.

The kitchen is in fitted pine, with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and an antique pine table set with ash chairs designed by the Cotswold architect Ernest Gimson. The Victorian pine dough bin serves as an unusual table. Wooden stairs lead to the first floor (stone floor of the mill), which sleeps four.

The master bedroom has a rare and opulent early eighteenth century oak four poster king sized bed. The second bedroom has twin beds. Both bedrooms have beautiful views over the mill pond. There is a small bathroom with bath and over bath showerhead. The ample landing preserves a number of original mill features and the original loading-door opens to the west.

The second floor (granary floor) acts as a hide for the bird life on the mill pond, with early 19th-century bolting machinery and gearing carefully preserved. It is reached by the original elm stairs. (These are steep and could be hazardous for very young children or the elderly; a door keeps them closed off from children.) Here is a large double bedroom with king-sized bed and an open children's room, with two single beds.

A second bathroom makes this four bedroomed cottage comfortable for eight guests. Above this floor is a gantry with a central catwalk. A sack hoist hangs in the cupola, whence light filters down through successive levels of glazed floor lights set in the traps, which have all been carefully retained.

The Grist Mill is situated in the heart of Owlpen valley below the Manor kitchen garden, with lovely views over the mill pond and the valley. It has its own drive and enclosed garden, including a large table for al fresco dining. The private garden offers complete serenity, with the constant murmur of the Ewelme brook running gently by.
