Visiting Griminish & Exploring The Western Isles

Benbecula features miles of beautiful white, sandy beaches. The Uist islands boast some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in Europe. If bird-watching is your forte, the island contains a wide variety of different species of birds including lapwing, red-shank, oyster-catcher, snipe, corn-crakes and golden eagles to name but a few. Many wading birds can also be seen locally. In fact, many wading birds and eagles can be seen from the Bayview cottage’s windows.

If fishing is your thing, then the North Atlantic ocean is quite literally on your doorstep, a stone’s throw from the front door. Plus locally, there are island locks aplenty teeming with brown trout – fishing permits are available locally at Macgillivray’s store in Balivanich for freshwater loch fishing. This is also a really good place to go fly fishing.

There are two golf courses, one in Benbecula and one at Askernish, South Uist. Or why not try horse riding in Balivanich? The local community school just 5 minutes’ drive away offers sports facilities, sauna and swimming pool.

There is Balranald nature reserve in the vicinity along with museums and craft centres. Or you may just wish to relax, walk, paint or take photos. You will find plenty of excellent subjects.

Fresh scallops, crabs etc can be purchased from Kallin shellfish at Kallin Harbour in North Uist. Really mouthwatering!! The unique Salar salmon in South Uist is only about 15mins drive away on the shore of Loch Carnan. Or you may wish to try your hand at winkle and cockle picking on the shore outside the cottage!

Bayview self-catering cottage is in one of the top spots for birdwatching in the UK.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafes in the vicinity, including Orsay inn, Loch Boisdale Hotel South Uist, live local music on Saturday nights at Loch Boisdale Hotel. Dark Island hotel, Hebridean jewellery cafe, Kildonan museum and cafe.
