Visiting Rye Harbour & Exploring East Sussex

Rye Harbour is one and a half miles from Rye and about 70 miles from London. The ancient town of Rye, one of the Cinque Ports, is perched on a hill overlooking the Romney Marshes, and is well known for its steep cobbled streets, picturesque timbered houses and historic Mermaid Inn, and also for its association with artists and writers, such as Henry James and E.F.Benson.

There are numerous antique shops and shops selling locally made pottery. Nearby is the attractive old town of Winchelsea, while eight miles away lies the seaside resort of Hastings. Many interesting excursions may be made into Kent and Sussex: to Canterbury, Battle (site of the Battle of Hastings), and to the National Trust properties of Sissinghurst, Batemans (home of Rudyard Kipling) and Smallhythe Place (home of the actress Ellen Terry). Day trips to France are possible from Dover or by Eurostar from Ashford.
