The Durham and Northumberland coasts have long sandy beaches, for those who want to be more active, there are great walks in the hills and dales.

"Quartermaster's is a real gem: a beautiful, well-appointed apartment tucked against the east curtain wall of the spectacular Brancepeth Castle. The apartment, as well as the Castle, are steeped in history - you almost expect knights in suits of armour to arrive on horseback, Tudor noblemen plotting their next political moves or a platoon of the Durham Light Infantry to come marching past! In fact, it's now a tranquil and relaxing place, with a romantic Grade 1 castle attached. The owner's attention to detail stands out in this pretty holiday home - spotlessly clean, thoughtfully furnished, it has all the equipment you need, including comfortable outdoor furniture, so we were able to breakfast in the sunshine on the sheltered patio." "Arriving at Brancepeth castle was an absolute pleasure, greeted by tall trees and a magical scene that takes you back to tales of knights and dragons... We had a wonderful rest here at the castle, the flat is so comfortable and pretty. It comes complete with everything you could possibly need for a short break. The nearby walks were enjoyable, we also attended the service at St Brandon's, which sits just a stones throw away. The people there were very warm and friendly.
