Just a minute’s walk from Ely Cathedral, the Grade II listed Coach House sits at the end of a secluded walled garden of Cathedral House and offers a unique self-catering retreat, where original features and vintage furnishings combine to create a comfortable and characterful place to stay.
This original Coach House has been carefully restored and converted into a charming cottage full of character. Tucked away at the bottom of a large walled garden, it offers a tranquil and secluded setting, perfect for a peaceful stay.
The accommodation is set over two floors. On the ground floor, the country-style kitchen features an old pine table and dresser, decorated with vintage enamel signs and traditional touches such as a “Lazy Susie” clothes airer. Alongside its rustic charm, it is fully equipped with a cooker, fridge, microwave, crockery, cutlery and utensils. The relaxed, rustic feel continues into the adjacent living room, where a terracotta pammet floor is partly covered by a large rug and an eclectic mix of comfy chairs creates a welcoming space. A pine bookcase well-stocked with books, traditional games, a radio and TV ensures plenty of entertainment options.
Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, one with views of the Cathedral. Both feature Victorian brass and cast-iron bedsteads with sprung mattresses, dressed in crisp white cotton bedding. A third bedroom, once the grain store, has been transformed into a cosy cabin-style single room that appeals to both children and adults. Each bedroom has its own en suite with toilet, wash basin and a half-size bath fitted with shower taps.
The cottage is well lit throughout and benefits from gas central heating. Hollow fibre duvets and pillows, along with all bed linen, towels, toilet soap, loo rolls, tea towels, cleaning materials and some basic provisions are provided. Laundry facilities are also available by arrangement, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay.
The holiday home is within the shadow of the cathedral. Is it only a short distance from Cromwell’s house, restaurants, shops and many other main facilities. Ely is a great starting point from which to visit Cambridge, colleges and universities. Duxford Air Museum is nearby and we are only 70 minutes from London's Kings Cross Railway Station. Stansted Airport is only 40 minutes away.
