The Old School House
Coryton, Okehampton, Devon
Summary
The Old School House is a remarkable property that seamlessly blends country charm with elegant interior design. Its spacious layout spans three interconnected sections: two historic wings and a contemporary addition, offering a unique combination of character and modern comfort.
Accommodation
The house is bathed in natural light throughout. The original Victorian wing features a large drawing room, complete with a piano, creating a perfect space for relaxation or entertaining. Above it is the master bedroom, which includes an en-suite with both a shower and bath and ample room for a cot if needed. At the rear entrance, handmade terracotta tiles lead to a lavatory with an original hand basin and a laundry room lies just beyond. The heart of the home is the spacious kitchen, located in what was once the infants’ room. Beautifully equipped, it features antique chairs, a carved walnut table, an Aga, and a Miele induction top cooker. A walk-in larder provides additional storage. Another entrance opens into a hallway, leading to a butler’s pantry and the airy drawing room in the new extension. This modern wing includes two bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom and the other served by a separate bathroom.
Upstairs, a bedroom with an open mezzanine area overlooks the orchard, offering a tranquil workspace or a cosy spot for a toddler’s cot. All bathrooms are equipped with underfloor heating and the showers are powerful and invigorating. The property also boasts ample outdoor space, with a garden offering spots to dine, relax, or simply enjoy the dramatic sunset views across the valley. Open fires in both sitting rooms, one of which doubles as a music room with a piano, create cosy spaces for afternoon tea or evening drinks.
In 2024, the Garden Rooms were introduced, just 15 metres from the main house. This romantic addition features two bedrooms and a bathroom, ideal for extra privacy or a special retreat.
